Volunteering Guide

We believe that quality education and healthcare are human rights, not privileges. But we need the help of volunteers like you to help realise our mission.

If you’re over 18, with a drive to make a difference – why not spend a minimum of two weeks in one of our destinations learning about local culture whilst giving something back to communities?

Why not encourage your colleagues or friends to do the same?

OUR VOLUNTEERING PROGRAMMES

School projects

Educate & empower by teaching English

SlumAid supports education centres worldwide for the many illiterate children seeing opportunities passing them by.

We need people who speak English fluently to support our existing full-time teaching staff, who can add their own twist to teaching and inspire children to love learning.

Our programmes are perfect for TESOL students and teachers. Watch a world of opportunities unfold for them, and for you too!

Skill-sharing

Give a life-changing gift by teaching what you do best

From arts, crafts and sports, to construction, cooking and event organising, IT or social media expertise, every skill can be useful to enrich the lives of the members of the communities we support. If you have a skill to share, you are the right person for us. We welcome CSR departments, single volunteers or groups of volunteers.

Healthcare & empowerment

Help improve the health conditions of children, young girls and women.

From mobile clinics to women centres, the range of programmes we support is very vast.

If you have medical or nursing training, you can help the local staff deliver treatments, organise workshops or training sessions, all while acquiring new experience and learning new skills.

Perfect for International Development students, Medicine and Nurse students and professionals, Psychology students, and social workers.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Involve your organisation in giving back through the power of employee volunteering.

We have both on-site and online volunteering programmes around the world for your employees to volunteer from the comfort of their homes or offices.

Our partners need support with IT services, social media marketing, accountancy, and staff training.

Companies can help local charities by donating their employees’ time and skills, or their resources, while building stronger relationships among co-workers.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE VOLUNTEERING

If you want to volunteer on-site, you will need to consider some practicalities before starting your experience. The Slum Aid team is here to help you and we will guide you through your experience. For online training sessions, we will provide all the information you need to get ready for your experience.

Here you can find some preliminary information useful to start planning your experience.

VOLUNTEERING COSTS

SlumAid offers a low-cost volunteering experience. Neither SlumAid nor our partner NGOs will charge your for their overheads or admin fees.

Each volunteering experience can be tailored according to your needs and budget.

Your costs are likely to be in the region of £1,000-2,000 including the cost of airfare, however this depends on the length of your stay and time of travel.

Volunteers pay for:

  • Flight tickets
  • Mandatory travel insurance
  • Accommodation (most of our partners offer suitable accommodation for a very cheap price)
  • Criminal record check
  • Subsistence while volunteering (food, local transportation, etc.)

VOLUNTEERING SAFETY

Some of our on-site volunteering programmes take place in high risk countries for visitors. SlumAid will monitor, assess and update the level of risk of each destination and advise you against travels if deemed unsafe.

VOLUNTEERING DOCUMENTATION

Passport

Your passport should be valid for
at least six months after your
return date.

You can apply for travel insurance online. Insure with a reputable company covering loss of personal belongings and medical expenses.

We need to guarantee the safety of our beneficiaries, especially if those are children.

You will be asked to provide a criminal record check or a character reference from your employers (or supervisor, if you are a student) before volunteering.

Visas

Countries have different agreements on visas. According to your nationality, you might need to follow different procedures or you might not be eligible for e-visas.

Once you register with us, we will provide you with useful links to apply for your visas.

ONLINE VOLUNTEERING

If you’re interested to participate in one of our online volunteering programme, you will not need to provide all the documents requested for on-site volunteers.

You will be interviewed by a member of our team, and later we will provide you training and material for you to start this great experience.
