A Bike That Changes a Life

For its 2020 Christmas campaign, SlumAid decided to support the “Bicycle Project” developed by our partners in Sierra Leone, the We Yone Child Foundation.

Thanks to our amazing donors, we managed to raise enough money to buy 40 bikes. This means that the life of 40 boys and girls is going to change.

The We Yone Child Foundation distributed the bikes to children and teenagers living in the Karene District. In this area, students need to walk long distances to reach their education centres. During their journey to school, girls risk to be attacked or sexually abused, while boys are often involved in illegal activities in exchange for a lift to school.

Thanks to this project, 40 students learnt to ride their bikes, and got some tips to keep their bikes in good shape. With this new set of skills in their pocket, students are now empowered and responsible for their education. Now students can reach safely and easily their schools and this will increase their attendance rate and reduce the risk of drop out.

Working with the We Yone Child Foundation was an amazing experience. It showed us the power of grass-roots communities, demonstrating that small charities can have a big impact on people’s lives and can fight powerfully to create a more equal world.

We expect to see great results from this project so stay tuned for updates on it!
